#LeadandLift | Episode 59
A new year is a new chapter in the book of your life. It’ll be filled with experiences and decisions that will be written in your story. The good thing about this is that you can make the decision what’s going to be scenes and the plot of it if you plan and resolve to accomplish the things that you want to this year.
To help you with this, I’ve created the CAKE framework, which are four ideas that will help you accomplish your new year’s resolution. But before I share the CAKE with you, I will share some lessons that I’m taking into the new year with me.
If you haven’t yet decided what goals to set, then maybe the goal needs to be focused on your growth and personal development. Maybe you’ve never had the time to sit and think about what you want, what are your dreams, or what can be your next level.
The first lesson I’ll be sharing with you is to schedule time in your calendar for fun. If we’re not intentional about it, the days will slip away and before you know it, the year goes by and suddenly we feel like something’s missing.
By scheduling time in your calendar you’ll be giving yourself the gift of awareness of how you are spending the 24 hours you’ve been given. Only by understanding what you do in that 24-hour period will you be able to adjust it and make time for more things.
“Success is what you do daily. If you have a calendar, see where you spend the 24 hours that you get in the day, you'll be able to pinpoint the things that is holding you back, that's tripping you up, the things that you'll need to change.”
Get yourself a planner and just start using it. Write things down so that you’re not bumbling through the week without direction. Set your intention so that you know what you’re trying to achieve.
The second lesson that I’ve personally applied myself is to work on my mindset. The best way to do this is by applying to get coached. We all have blindspots, coaches will help us be aware of them and change our lives for the better more efficiently. You can have another level of joy, happiness and confidence and you can get that with a great high performance coach.
The third lesson is support, and being aware of who supports you as you chase your dreams and goals. Have a support network, a few friends, key family members, spouse, or children who will help you show up even on days that you don’t want to. They’ll be there to cheer you on so that you won’t give up and to listen to you when you’re struggling. Get support from people, if you don’t have it right now, there are many ways to find it.
Brendon Burchard says common sense is not common practice. When you already know what you want and how to do it, what is the next step then? Take action. Don’t shy away from making a decision to do the thing. Break it down into small pieces. Do a little piece today and do another little piece tomorrow. Get started right away.
The fifth lesson is to get clarity. Know what you want so you can stop drifting through the days. If you don’t know what you want, you can’t ever get it and nobody can help you get it because nobody knows what you need.
I wear glasses, so I am constantly reminded that if I don't have clarity, I'm probably going to bump into something.
When I figured out the thing that I wanted. It's like the universe opened up. All of a sudden, all these amazing people were around me willing to help me to achieve the things that I wanted.
The sixth lesson I’d like to share with you is managing your habits. Whatever you life looks like right now, it has become like that all because of your habits. If you’re not happy with the life you have today, your habits are what needs to change. In the same way, you need to create new habits if you want to create new things in your life.
“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.” - John Maxwell
Success is what you do daily. Once you set up your calendar and journal, check out which habits are holding you back or tripping you up and commit to changing these habits.
The seventh lesson I’ve learned is to be in the room. Network and connect with people, attend conferences and events. Doing so will give you new friends and they will provide a new perspective. Being with people will also give you drive and motivation to keep chasing your dreams.
Your dreams do come true, you’ve got to have faith. You are here now despite of everything that we’ve all gone through in the last two years. We survived and some of us even thrived. You’ve got to keep the dream alive because it is what’s going to keep you alive. If you keep working at it, they’re going to come true.
Next, you’ve got to listen to your call. You were born with unique gifts and there’s a reason why you’re here on this earth. The purpose of your gifts is for you to share it with people around you. At certain points of your life, you will feel a deep stirring that tells you that there’s more that you can accomplish, there’s more you can do, and there’s more that you can leave in this world when you leave it. Listen to that call because that’s how you’re going to get joy and fulfillment. When you hear it and feel it, answer it.
Start small and reiterate. Don’t wait for something to be perfect before putting it out there. Launch it and open your ears out for feedback. Through comments, suggestions, and complaints, you are able to shape your product and grow with it until it becomes something awesome.
Be in a community. Find a community of people that are like you that you want to g row with. Share your wins, share your challenges, and share the solutions that you had to problems that you have already won through. People are never going through something alone, there’s always someone else encountering the very same thing and connecting with each other will help a struggling person progress through their hardship faster and with less pain.
Share your story. Sometimes things happened and you go through it then you put it aside and forget it. However, how you were able to go through it or what drove you to succeed despite of it are very important things to know for someone who might be going through the same thing that you did. Sharing your story will help people, inspire people, and make them feel like they’re not alone in what they face. Share the authentic you, the lessons that you learned, the reasons why you made certain choices in life, and the things that make you happy.
Schedule a time for breaks daily. When you put out energy constantly all day, you will need to recharge. Plan a vacation with your loved ones or on your own, put up a reminder of your plan to go to vacation somewhere where you can always see it so that you have something to look forward to.
Don’t chase, instead, attract. Sometimes you just need to do your best and let go. Trust that the universe will do the rest. It works. You know that you don’t have control over everything, so do your best on what is within your control and have faith that everything else will fall into place. Your work will not go unrewarded.
“You just need to do your best. And then let go. Trust that the universe will do the rest. You don't have control over everything so do your part.”
Measure and reflect. Measure your performance and track your numbers so you will have the story to show from where you started and how far you've progressed. Sometimes as we're moving through the year, we get a little bit frustrated. We feel like we're not as far as we should be. That's when you pull out your measurement and the tracking that you've been doing to look at how far you've come and check how far do you have to go and then reevaluate.
Pause and be kind to others. Sometimes we're going by so fast through the day because we feel we got to conquer everything and we miss to connect with the people along the way. You’ve got to slow down and appreciate somebody. It doesn’t have to be something big, you don't know where this person is at and by you just pausing to take a moment to acknowledge that they're there, you might already be doing a lot for that person.
Prioritize time for you. Yes you have a family, you got friends, and you have work that's never ending. However, if you don't take care of you, you won't be able to take care of the people that you love. You need to find out what fills you up. It’s not about being selfish about being smart. When you're ill, it impacts everyone around you and it impacts their day and the things that they wanted to do because somebody's got to take care of you.
Achieving your goals is delicious, just like cake. Cake is something that’s eaten whenever you celebrate something, and achieving your resolutions is something worthy of celebration. As you look through your list of resolutions, remember the word CAKE.
Personally, I’ve invested a lot in coaching for 2023, I’ve invested in multiple people that I’ve enlisted to help me get better and help me work on my blind spots. Here’s a tip, if you’re ever hiring a coach, make sure you ask them who’s their coach, and how many coaches they have. If your coach is not working on themselves, don’t hire them. Everybody can get to a next level so make sure your coach is always working on themselves.
Create a network of people around you who are further in the journey than you are so that they can help lift you and guide you as you grow. Make it so that these people hold you accountable to the things you say you’re going to do and the little steps that you’re going to achieve on your goal. Having an accountability group can also provide motivation for you to keep going and people that will listen and encourage you whenever you stumble.
Track everything. Whether it be the growth of your social media, your business, or your habits, know the numbers that you’re trying to hit every single month. If your goal is to make a million dollars, then you’ve got to start with the first dollar and then the second. Track that progress so you can see how far you've come and how far you need to get to, to get to that million dollars if that's your goal.
Measure also your habits. Identify the habits that hold you back and commit to eliminating and replacing them.
Energy is a high performance habit because if you don't have energy, you can't do the work and you can't chase the goal. Being aware of how to raise your energy level, and then how to recharge is really important. You’ve got to figure out what gets your energy up really, really quickly and what do you need to do to calm yourself down and recharge.
If there is anything I want you to walk away with from this entire post, it's to take care of yourself and invest in your own growth, because nobody else will. I wish you abundant success, joy and happiness. Let's all have a cake in 2023 and celebrate it too. Let's win this new year!
