#LeadandLift | Episode 66
Last year, I shared what you could do when you don’t hit your goal this year and that’s to move it to the next year. One of the goals I had on my vision board was to become an author, and I never lost sight of it because I included that in my goals for 2023.
I’m happy to say that about a month ago, I became a number one international best-selling author. It was a wild ride to get to the top and we had to hit a lot of categories to achieve that. What I want to share with you in this post is the A.C.T Framework, which was instrumental in helping me achieve my goal and my hope is that it will help you achieve your dreams and goals too.
A lot of times we believe that we need to be an expert on everything and do everything ourselves to achieve our goals. However, time and time again stories have shown that people’s victories and successes were achieved because they were brave and wise enough to ask for help.
We’ve got to open our eyes to the people around us. If you share the dreams and the goals that you’re trying to achieve, you’ll find people who can help you get there. All you’ve got to do is ask. Ask people for help and share that vision and that dream so that they can help you achieve it and that you can also in turn help them achieve theirs.
Getting coached takes less time and makes better use of every time spent doing what you have to do to succeed in what you want. In writing, for example, you could spend some time and effort to train yourself. It would probably take you a lot of years to learn what you need to do to succeed on your own. Add the fact that success would not be guaranteed no matter how long it takes you to do it.
A coach has been through and has taken many people through the things that you’ll have to go through. It’s the difference between hiking on a mountain trail without a map and hiking with a guide who’s been up and down the mountain several times over. It’s effective, it’s time-saving, and it saves you from a lot of pitfalls and hazards that you might’ve had to normally learn the hard way.
A coach also provides clarity. When you have clarity in what you want, the next steps will reveal itself to you. In the flipside of that, if you lack clarity, you’ll be doing busy work and end up getting nowhere. With a coach, you’ll know where to go and what you should be focusing on in the stage that you’re in.
“If we only take the time to get clarity, we would know what the next steps are and we would go so much faster. We would achieve our goals. But a lot of times, we lack that clarity. So then we end up doing busy work, and nothing gets done.” - Chabidaye Jaglal Ramnath
Another C that I’d like to share with you in this ACT framework, is “champions”. My little one is turning 13 and the eldest is turning 16 and they were the biggest champions who cheered me on. I asked them if they think I could be an author, and they believed that I could and expressed it sweetly. They encouraged me to go through with it, not even worrying about the timeline or word count - they just knew that I could do it.
Champions cheer us on and help us move forward in what we want to do. These people energize and motivate us and we’ve got to let them push us forward.
The first T in the ACT framework is “timeline”. When you have timelines attached to your goals, you’re better able to identify the tasks that you need to accomplish. You can then schedule blocks of time in your calendar to sit and work on these tasks.
The other T in the ACT framework is teams. As I’ve said earlier, you don’t need to do it alone - actually, you shouldn’t do it alone. That’s because as competent and as efficient as you are, you’re not good at everything, nobody is. People have a specialization, a skill that is the best use of their time.
What happens if you don’t stick to what you’re good at is that you end up spreading yourself too thin, dividing your time into many different tasks that someone else is better at. It’s a waste of time and a waste of effort.
However, if you were to surround yourself with a team with many different skills and talents, you’re better able to reach success. Focus on what you’re good at and delegate the rest of the tasks to others who are better suited to handling them.
My point in sharing with you the ACT framework is for you to dream bigger dreams and to encourage you that you do have what it takes to achieve them. People who have big dreams end up delaying them, putting them on indefinite hold, or even making their dreams smaller because they don’t know where to start and where to go next.
Share your dreams with people, share your vision with them, and let them in on your journey to get there, and my friend, I promise you, you will get there.
“You don't have to chase your goals alone anymore. You don't have to set small goals because you don't know how to do it. My friend, dream big. Get a coach and get a team to help you because you can achieve anything that you want.” - Chabidaye Jaglal Ramnath
